The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was established in November 2012 and initially housed in the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) building in Ratmalana. The first Dean Brig. (Prof) PTR Makuloluwa with the Vice-Chancellor Major General Milinda Peiris were instrumental in designing and establishing the new building at Werahara, Boralasgamuwa and the faculty shifted to its newly constructed state-of-the-art building at Werahera in November 2014.

The FAHS conducts six B.Sc. (Hons.) degree programmes and had its first intake of students admitted in January 2013 to undergraduate courses in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Radiography and Radiotherapy. In addition to the local students, there are foreign students, lateral entry students from the Ministry of Health and Tri-forces health departments from the Ministry of Defence. The six B.Sc. (Hons) degree programmes offered by FAHS KDU are in conformity with the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) at the level of SLQF 6.

The FAHS KDU is well equipped with state of art laboratories providing teaching, training, service and research facilities to students and teachers. The adjoining building to FAHS KDU is the University Hospital (UH KDU) which is an 800 bedded hospital with all possible facilities for patients and students for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Medical and Allied Health sciences.

The FAHS is armed with a young enthusiastic academic staff with academic excellence, diversity, and leadership in addition to the senior professors and senior lecturers with experience and devotion. They have revealed their research capabilities with a remarkable number of publications over a short period of time. The objective of FAHS staff is to improve existing programs to a world recognized standard and commence new programs to increase our ability to integrate with the global educational health care institutes to extend collaborations for healthcare provision and engage in international research.

In the modern world, career prospects in Allied health sciences are expanding rapidly. The graduates of FAHS KDU will be capable of developing careers as academics in universities and other health educational institutions, employees of hospitals and health sector institutions of government and private sector and researchers in health sciences. In addition, the unlimited overseas opportunities are expanding and opening up for health professionals where KDU FAHS graduates have already demonstrated their capacity.

The ultimate goal of the FAHS KDU is to become the best Allied Health Science Faculty in Sri Lanka and obtain international recognition as one of the best institutes in South Asia producing outstanding health care professionals.
