nEUROcare-a European initiative for capacity building to meet the challenges of caring for people with neurodegenerative disorders in Sri Lanka

KDU has been successful in becoming a part of the four Sri-Lankan universities selected for the nEUROcare project granted by Erasmus. The University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya and University of Ruhuna are the three other selected universities. The four local universities are collaboratively working with Kristianstad University which is the main partner university in Sweden. Moreover, four other universities from Estonia, Slovenia, Norway and Cyprus will also take part in this program under the same grant. This program will expand new horizons for collaborative academia between the KDU and the other national/international universities in designing a Master’s Degree in neurodegenerative disorders. Mr. Prasanna Herath is the manager of the program representing the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, FAHS- KDU, and four other academic members (Dr. Kalpani Abhayasinghe, Dr. Dinithi Vidanage, Ms. Maliga Wijesiri, and Mr. Chandima Kumara) from the same Department initiated work in this successful program.

As the very first local event, a five-day workshop and a meeting on nEUROcare were held at the Water’s Edge-Colombo from 07th to 11th February 2022 with the participation of all national/international partner universities. The workshop conducted comprised of comprehensive coverage on Work packages overview, administrative overview, inculcating this Masters programme to the Sri Lankan Qualification Framework, a summary on the modules to be developed. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of KDU, Prof. Sanath Dhammika graced the inauguration representing the Vice-chancellor, KDU.

Further, there was a social gathering has been held in the Club house, KDU on the 9th of February 2022. The event was graced by Major General Milinda Peiris, the Vice-Chancellor, KDU, Brigadier Wipula Chandrasiri, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Defence and Administration), KDU and the representative academia from the national/international partner universities. 

As the next phase of the program, all academic members will attend the 2nd meeting and the workshop which will be held at Kristianstad University, Sweden in May 2022.
